What Shortwave News Stations to listen to?

I am a Shortwave Newbe. I bought a small short wave radio (Receive only) for SHTF situations so I can get uncensored news from outside of the USA so I can keep abreast on what really is going on.

I live in the New England North East area. Anyone know of a good station/Frequency for that purpose?

I got a SW Radio in '99. Listened regularly for several years.

There's one out f Maine. WBCQ 7.415. It's very entertaining and has some good talent. Not really like any other station I found on shortwave.

There's a couple more I can think of 12.160 and 5.070. Forgot the call sign for those.

Re: What Shortwave News Stations to listen to?

This is not so simple of a question.
There are lots of English-language transmissions all the time, but there is lots of variability in if you can receive them or not.

This page-
http://hfradio.org/english/
shows a listing of transmissions in English at the moment of you visiting the web page. Keep a notepad near the radio and write down the times & freq of any you like.

------

Also what I recommend is you have at least one cheapo analog-tuner SW radio, and one with a digital tuner. The analog radio will not tune as precisely, or hold a tune as well as the digital--but I find that it is FAR easier to quickly scan and listen for English-language broadcasts with an analog tuner than it is with a digital.

The digitals have auto-scan features, but they are slower because they can't recognize human speech from noise--they only recognize signal strength. So if you set the sensitivity really high, they stop on every single bit of spectrum noise they find..... or (if you set the sensitivity way low) then they silently skip over huge parts of the bands as they roll through, and you don't really know what they're skipping.

Also analogs are all cheaply-made nowadays and have a fair amount of dial error, so it's helpful to figure that out at first. Scan for a big/powerful station with your digital radio, and then leave it on while you scan for the same station with the analog radio. The $25 Kaito analog I have has about 125 kHz of dial error--a station it shows around 4200 kHz is actually up around 4325 kHz.

-end-

I listen to a lot of places.....I have it one just about everyday in the office and a night after dinner.

You better get a good outdoor antenna if you want good reception these days.....we are at an 11 year low in the sun spot cycle. An antenna is key to enjoying this hobby. Antennas are really a hobby in themselves....I've build several and have a fantastic 39 ft tall vertical dipole that is the very best I've ever heard - it is simply the very best design for my location.....you do not need to be that tall...years ago I have a vertical mast made out of just 2 pieces of electrical conduit and it worked nearly as well.....they are great and have a very small footprint.

A good homemade antenna will let a little $150 Sony radio out-perform a $3000 radio.....antenna is the key.....even a long lenfth of wire clipped to your antenna will get the job done.

Radio Canada Intl
CRI = China Radio International
Radio Tiawan International
Voice of the Islamic Republic of Iran
Voice of Korea (North Korea) - just for fun propaganda....
KBS World Radio (South Korea)
Radio Habana Cuba
All India Radio
Radio Cairo
BBC
Voice of Russia World Service

Pretty much anything you want....just pick it and go....I bounce around based on what is happening in the world news when I want the local perspective.

Radio Netherlands and CRI tend to be my main-stays.....they both have the very best programs....but there are a few others.

You really need to buy "Passport to World Band Radio"....it is like the TV Guide of shortwave listening.....they cost about $20 and come out around Christmas every year.....I get one as a gift every year: Not just frequency listings, but lots of radio reviews, antenna reviews, a great book to have every year.

http://www.passband.com/

You can also buy at Universal Radio: (Great place to buy everything)

http://www.universal-radio.com/

http://www.odxa.on.ca/ did have a free PDF spreadsheed of majoy english frequency broadcasts.....updated every month.... but it looks like it may be in their electronis magazine subscription.....it was really nice and free....let me do some more looking but it does not look to be there anymore......lots of good stuff at odxa.on.ca

FOUND IT!!!!! Make this a Favorite....very useful!!! http://www.odxa.on.ca/WES.pdf

I'll post more later.

I like listening to SW, too, but the hardest thing is to find any real unbiased news out there, be it on SW or elsewhere, because they all seem to have some sort of bias. I haven't listened to radio netherlands, though. Maybe its worthwhile. The best I've found are BBC and raido deutchland (germany)? Its been a while since i listened.

Tune to 12.160 12 am est-4pm est M-F: Alex Jones. About as good an honest take on the news as you will find.

Surprizeingly you will find very little honest reporting on the "news" in the other nations of the world. If there was a real actual difference in the control in a country such as Cuba, you would have Radio Havana screaming from the rooftops day after day year after year about 911 being an inside job. Since this doesn't happen you know that the worldwide masonic sionist "fix" is in.

Finding an "uncensored" station will be tough. They all have their filters whether it is political in the case of the national stations or financial in the case the comercial ones. If you listen to a number of different ones, the hope is you will be getting a more balanced overall impression of a situation or event. It may or may not be the truth however.

Try this link

When listening to sw radio, it is alot like listening to other people talk directly to you or overhearing people talking
to others.

Everyone has a agenda,

Everyone speaks thru filters.

There is no such thing as unbiased speech and one persons truth as they believe it, will be someone else's lies.

All you can do is listen to as many sources and come up with your own truth.
That can be supported by the evidence you find and can pass your smell test.
There are other's on this thread that have said much of the same thing.

I do recommend to not just get your news from one source,

In a lot of ways the internet, can be a good source of news but, there is so much more crap and distorted information on the net, that it can be almost imposable to filter the truth out.

Using s.w radio is a great way to find out what the other side is saying and thinking.

As they believe it , or want they want you to believe

Just remember

If the majority of sources are saying the same thing or close to the same thing.
It will probably be true.
Just do your own due diligence and you should do ok.

If you knowingly listen to a source that you know that they put out bullshit and half truth's along with the truth sometimes.

How can you trust them?

Look at everything!

Short wave is good for more than just news.
If you pay attention you can also learn much about how other people in the world live and what their viewpoints are.

That can be a thing of great value.

Just remember ,

There is no such thing as uncensored news, it is all put through some sort of filter.

It is up to you to decode what you hear.

IMHO

All the time I've spent with getting my ham license and working that, I'd totally forgotten SWLing. There are several nice things about an all band ham rig. One is tuning in SW stations just for listing. I had not thought of that until now.
